DNV (Det Norske Veritas) is an independent foundation with the purpose of safeguarding life, property, and the environment. Companys history goes back to 1864, when DNV was established in Norway to inspect and evaluate the technical condition of Norwegian merchant vessels.

Since then, DNVs core competence has been to identify, assess, and advise on how to manage risk. Whether classifying a ship, or giving advice on how to best maintain an aging oil platform,  focus is to safely and responsibly improve business performance for the customers.

DNV is sponsoring four professorships at NTNU, covering Marine engineering and hydrodynamics, Operational logistics, Ice mechanics, and – together with Farstad Shipping, Island Offshore and Havila Shipping – also Ship design.

For DNV the motivation for these sponsorships is twofold. Firstly, as part of the Maritime Cluster in Norway, DNV takes their responsibility for acquiring and developing competence at, and candidates from, the universities in Norway. This will maintain today’s leading position within the maritime and offshore industry. Secondly, through active sponsoring and liaising with «our» candidates, DNV gets access to the accumulated knowledge from all professorships. This enables us to secure our strong position within the maritime and offshore industry worldwide.
